JanuaryDoubling My DVD CollectionJanuary 7, 2005 at 8:51 am AST by Rodney MacLeodI don’t like buying DVDs. I love watching movies, but do not like buying them.
I often see a movie for sale and think, ‘I loved that movie. I could watch it a couple of times. I should buy it.” For the most part I do resist this urge. I usually don’t buy movies because I never do watch them, or at least I do not watch them as much as I thought I would.
Right now I own a few movies on vhs, and until yesterday four on DVD (one of which I have not watched after owning it for almost one year). My problem is that when I want to watch a movie I look at what is available in the house and then go rent a movie because I can watch a movie a have not seen yet, and the movies that are at my house will always be there to watch some other time. Some other time usually never happens.
I have a vhs copy of
American History X (an old neighbour left it at my place three or four years ago) that I have never watched even though I think I will really enjoy it.
Yesterday I broke down and bought four DVDs. I was at Microplay and the nice clerk behind the counter pointed out that their previously viewed movies were on sale, buy one get one free. Normally I would pass this up, but sitting right there on the top was Punch Drunk Love (which has one of my favourite fight scenes in it). The cover really stood out and every time I looked at the display case I wanted it more, so I looked around for my free one. I saw
V the mini series, and then Sleepers. I now had to choose between the two, or find a fourth. I found
The Abyss one of my favourite movies from my high school days. I almost bought
Planet of the Apes, but I could not find a sixth movie.
I am most looking forward to watching V since it is the only one that I have not seen yet, at least in full. I caught part of it on TV a couple of months ago and liked what I saw.

Normally I go to Jumbo and rent a movie for $5.00 or so and then, I always forget to return them. Now my $5 rental just turned into a $10 rental. So I figured I might as well buy the movie since it is like getting $10 off. Also I recommend buying the perviously viewed movie at Jumbo. Same as the real thing but cheaper. But for the most part I buy movies for other people: People that i live with who may want to watch a good movie, friend who may want to borrow one and for my children (when the time comes). I only buy cartoon movie, action movies or superhero movies. I find these type of movies can be easily watched over and over. Not like a suspense or non enetertaining movie.
I also recommend people who are starting a DVD collection to join up in Columbia house. Cheap DVDs. Once you finish your first requirements, quite and wait for Columbiahouse to call you back. The offer a pretty good re-entry fee.
Posted by dwayne on January 7, 2005 at 12:20 pm ASTI find I have the opposite effect with watching movies in which I owe. I have a collection of about 60 DVDs, mostly movies but some TV series, and when I buy a DVD I try to buy ones that I really liked and ones that I could watch over and over again. My problem is that when I feel like watching a movie, I'm too lazy to actually go rent one and I'm quite content to just grab one off my shelf and watch. The problem is that there are a lot of great TV Series and movies I'd love to rent but because of my damn DVD collection I'm too lazy to rent them. So besides the movies I own, I only see the ones that I go see at the theatre, or the ones that I rent with a group of friends which are ones that you have to compromise to see so you actually never get to see the ones that you really want to watch. That's a long ramble...but basically my DVD collection makes me much more of a lazy ass.
Posted by PAUL MAC on January 8, 2005 at 1:07 am ASTI only buy movies that i can watch over and over and still enjoy. I like movies that make you think and you might have to watch a few times to fully understand it and appriecite it. I like different movies, that is, origional movies. I owen 25 - 30 dvd's and they range from anything between 10 Things I Hate About You to A Clockwork Orange. I also would like to invest in some TV shows on dvd, like The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Rescue Me, Dead Like Me, or just about any show from HBO. good times.
