Taser Tag
July 22, 2004 at 12:23 pm AST by Rodney MacLeod

Recently Jerry Knight, of Ontario, died after aparently being shot with a taser gun. Taser guns are supposed to be a non-lethal weapon used as an alternative to guns, pepper spray and batons. A taser gun shoots 2 barbed probes at the target delivering 50,000 volts of electricity affecting the nervous system and causing the target the crumple to the ground. After the initial shot the gun can them be used in close proximaty to deliver charges directly (usful if being attacked by multiple people). the affects are temporary and the target should get up within seconds. That is if they do not die.

There are 50 deaths recorded in the United States (4 in canada) since 2001 suspected to be caused by a taser gun. In most cases autopsies proved nothing. In These case it was usually found that the deceased had a weak heart usually the result of recent drug use.

When arresting a violent person police must consider the publics safety, their own safty and the safety of the offender. If the offender becomes violent they most be subdued. A baton, or hand to hand combat can only be used up close putting the officer at risk, and when effective the offender usually sustains injuries often requiring medical attention. Pepper spray can also be used, but pepper spray does not affect everybody, and since it spray can affect innocent bystanders or another officer. The effects of pepper spray are not instant giving the violent offender a chance to inflict more damage. The effects of pepper spray can last up to 5 hours as opposed to second for the taser gun. The last option would be the gun, definitely a lethal weapon, to be used in only the most extreme case.

Do the advantages of using a taser gun justify the less than 1 percent mortality rate?

GameCube vs. X-box vs. PS2
July 20, 2004 at 4:22 pm AST by Rodney MacLeod

A friend of mine recently purchased an X-box. We drove around town for a while checking out the prices of different systems and settled on an X-box for $199 at Future Shop it came with a start up kit (which is just a second control pad). Then we went to Zellers and bought a 2 controller pack for $39. The only other X-box deal we could find was at some video game store in the Charlottetown Mall. They had and X-box with Tetris and Star Wars: The Clones Wars for $199. Probably a better deal than at future shop, but he was not interested in the Star Wars game.

I am pretty sure this discussion goes on all the time, but which system do you prefer?

Fahrenheit 9/11 Not What I Expected
July 7, 2004 at 11:06 am AST by Rodney MacLeod

I saw Fahrenheit 9/11 yesterday. I went in with high expectations since I thought Bowling for Columbine was so well done, but like most times when I have high expectations for movies I was let down. It was not that I did not like what Moore had to say because for the most part I agree with what he was trying to say. It could have been partly because I felt there was very little information presented that I did not already here from some other source. Maybe this is because I live in Canada and news agencies here do not feel the pressures that US news agencies feel when they put a negative spin on news affecting their government giving me views of the same story they here in the states.

I also feel Moore tried to Moore relied more on emotion than on facts. There is a lengthy segment dealing with the family of a fallen solider which I feel was over done. It felt like he was trying to overwhelm the viewer with emotion just incase he could not reach you with the facts that he presented.

Spider-Man 2
July 5, 2004 at 1:24 pm AST by Rodney MacLeod

I did go see SpiderMan 2 Friday afternoon and I am excited to go see it again. So far it is my favourite comic book movie made. The fight scenes with Doc Ock are incredible. There were some really cheesey scenes, but these were consistant with comic book dialogue. The CGI was better than the first movie, I actually forgot that half of the time Spider-Man was computer generated. I loved the way they did Doctor Octopus. Spiderman is one of my favourite comic book characters, but I do not know much about Doc Ock, so I do not know how acuated they made him. Whether Doc Ock was acurate to comics I loved him anyways.

Golf Skins Games
July 5, 2004 at 1:21 pm AST by Kent MacLeod

So it's the week-end again and you're sitting down to watch TV and you notice a skins game on. So you decide to watch the game because hey it is 4 guys going head to head for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Each hole could be anybody's hole. But then you think about it......hey these guys playing are already millionaires or extremly rich anyways. They're just out here to have fun... Oh look Jon Daley is teeing off with a putter, doesn't look like he needs to win this hole. Now picture this....4 regular Joes, all of them maybe played the games 5 times each summer, average score 100, playing for $10,000.00 holes, now that would be great watching. People missing 2 foot puts for more money than they have ever seen. Golfers going for it from the woods. Five shots of out the bunker. More cursing than Chris Rock doing stand up. There caddies are there best friends. There caddies hardly ever play golf. Drinking allowed. I think that would be good watching

Your Own Action Figure
July 5, 2004 at 1:10 pm AST by Kent MacLeod

Think about this....your own action figure. Think about when you a were little, or even now, going to play GI Joe or any other type of action figure. You start by choosing the best, you fav, figurine and killing the rest of crappy ones off with your favorite one till it is only your favorite one left and the bad guy. Now picture it, your favorite action figure, the ultimate bad guy and yourself. Man that would have been great. All you have to do is send in your picture and what type of action figure you want, whether it be GI Joe, a wrestler, or a superhero,.. any kind of action figure..think about it.
