Lets Give Them Something to Talk About
December 12, 2004 at 2:15 pm AST by Rodney MacLeod

What is the point of a talk show? For the most part they interview people who have done nothing more than appear in a movie. For the most part the interviews are mundane chit chat. They talk about the first time they met, or how they just bought a new dog and it craps all over the place. Why should I care about these things? The only reason they even bother going on these talk shows is to advertise there latest movie, or TV show. All a talk show is, is one great big commercial. They daytime talk shows take it one step further and give away stuff on their shows. Oprah's big car give away at the first of this season cost Oprah nothing. Ford, or whatever car company it was gave Oprah all of these cars for free. Oprah's people warned everyone that this show was going to be incredible and got great ratings and Ford got a commercial on TV that people did not miss because they were in the bathroom or making a snack. The only good thing about any talk show is the humour. Some have great monologues, or skits, but after that they have nothing. Five minutes of funny and then nothing.

The sad thing is I do get sucked into these things. I was working while Oprah gave away her cars, but I snuck out to the living room every now and then to join my roommate to find out Oprah's big news. I watch Conan O’Brien because his skits are funny, and usually stick around to here him be witty with different actors.

Then there is Doctor Phil. Who in there right mind would go on national television to seek marriage counselling? Are you saving money? Are you saving enough money to have Phil yell at and berate you until cry? I assume they have watched the show before they know that Phil will blame them. It does not matter how right you think you are, you will get blamed for something. Do these people think they will be the one that proves Phil wrong and not look like and idiot, or a pathetic loser? There are reasons that psychologists and psychiatrists have confidentiality agreements. Private sessions do not leave all of your co-workers talking about you for the next month. And then there is the spouse that agrees to go on the show. How can he or she think it will be good, this is Doctor Phil?

I have got to go, I think Ellen Degeneris is on.

The only talk show I ever make an effort to watch is The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I find him very funny and smart when talking politics and stuff. He usually has guests on the show for a reason, not just for who they are.
